There is a constant battle of teaching sexual education in the United States. Nationally there are standards in each state to teach sex education to public schools. However, they all have different criteria that covers a very broad range of topics which many teachers take the liberty to divert from the agenda and do it their own way. Some teachers lack the training necessary to help our youth. According to the news website times union, a certain district in New York has an image of vagina that is labeled "Insert penis here." With 45 percent of boys and 40 percent girls sexually active in New York high schools, that kind of material shouldn't be allowed in schools. A major problem throughout the United States is there is no consistent way of teaching sex to students. There is a great debate on where to set a bench mark for kids to learn enough material but no conclusion has yet to be made.
Variations of Teaching Sexual Education
Many schools don't have a sex education program and instead of from school they learn from friends, media, or parents. According to an NBC news article, a Florida mother sued her kids school district for the having to much explicit material in school. The class was being taught in a comprehensive matter and the children were learning about contraception, abortion, and homosexuality. Whether this be enough information and/or lack of information, the kids still need to learn about sex. There is no standard of how much material needs to be covered or what specifically should be taught to kids in school. Making it a big problem for teachers to create a teaching technique for children.
Variations of Teaching Sexual Education
- Having a trained teacher come into class and teach the class
- Different laws through out states require different lesson plans for classes
- Showing how to use condoms versus telling students how to use them
- Having parents teach the kids instead of schools
